The Truth About Oil Changes!

Are you hearing contradictory information floating around about engine oil, what kind to use, and how often should it be changed? Many auto mechanics are no longer absolute on the 3,000-mile oil change tradition. They do agree however, that vehicle owners should follow two rules for determining when to have an oil change service:

    * Follow the recommended interval as listed in the owner's manual.
    * When the "oil change" light appears.

With today's advanced engine technology and oil chemistry, the recommended interval for oil changes has lengthened considerably. Depending on the make and model of your vehicle, that interval could be anywhere between 5,000 and 15,000 miles. Take time to read your manual!

Is an Oil Change necessary before a long road trip?

That's a good question! There are two obvious answers!

    * BEFORE: If your vehicle will reach the mileage or time interval for the required oil change during your trip, you will want to change it before you head down the road. You don't want to have any problems in a strange town.
    * AFTER: If the time for an oil change won't occur until after your road trip (taking into account all the extra miles on your trip), don't worry about changing it before starting out.

A word to the wise:

Make sure that all the systems of your vehicle are operating at peak efficiency before starting out on your summer road trip. As you make your vacation plans, schedule that needed oil change or other maintenance service a good week before leaving. It can be risky having service work performed just before a trip. For example, the drain plug may not be tightened properly and the vibration of the road loosens it and you end up leaving a trail of oil.

Remember: Regular oil changes are necessary to prevent engines from wearing out prematurely. It is money and time well spent to guarantee your vehicle's optimum performance for many, many more miles of use.
