Oil Changes: Can I use Recycled Oil in my Vehicle?

Why is there such mystery surrounding motor oil? This is due to the fact that motor oil is a complex, heavily researched, continuously improved, and extensively tested product. To us humans, it all looks feels, smells and, we assume, tastes the same, but engines can tell the difference in the various weights, quality, and freshness.

If you are looking for quality Tune ups Milton-Freewater OR your search can be over now with our Wentland Diesel & Auto Repair Services Milton-Freewater OR shop. Also find Oil change Milton-Freewater OR services with us.

Here are a few facts about the use of recycled versus new for oil changes:

    *      Recycled is NOT inferior in quality to new—
o The refining processes today are the same for recycling as used for crude refining. These newer refining techniques yield high quality base oil that is equal to crude refining. Many brands now use the highest quality of recycled oil and formula for engine performance that exceeds the specification set by the automotive industry

    *      Recycled does NOT void engine warranties —
o The use of recycled products that have been certified by the American Petroleum Institute (API) have been approved by almost all major vehicle manufacturers. Because the protection of name-brand recycled oils exceeds all API specifications, they can be safely used and will not void engine warranties.

    *      Recycled does NOT require more frequent oil changes —
o Because recycled oil has the same performance and protection qualities as regular, vehicle owners can follow their vehicle’s oil change intervals just like for all other kinds of oil.

    *      Recycled can be mixed with regular—
o Because the characteristics of recycled are the same as new, and are fully compatible, the two can be safely mixed.

    *      You can switch to a recycled motor oil—
o It is generally not a problem if it is necessary to change from regular to recycled and back.

A Tip to Remember about Oil Changes: Just a few dollars and a few minutes every 90 days or 3,000 miles will keep your vehicle driving smoothly down the road.

As part of the service on your diesel, you should be aware of a couple of issues regarding Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF).

What is Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)?

DEF is a non-toxic solution of 32.5% urea in de-ionized water. This fluid is sprayed into the exhaust stream of diesel vehicles to cause a chemical reaction and break down dangerous NOx emissions into harmless nitrogen and water. This system is called Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and can be found on many diesel pickups and SUVs. DEF is not a fuel additive and never comes into contact with diesel. It is stored in a separate tank, typically with a blue filler cap.

What will happen if my truck runs out of DEF?

The EPA requires vehicle manufacturers to design vehicles to ensure they cannot run without DEF. Before a truck's DEF tank runs empty, a series of alerts will appear on the dashboard, alerting the driver. Generally, when the DEF tank level drops below 10%, an amber warning lamp will light, at 5% this lamp starts flashing, and below 2.5%, it will be a solid amber warning light. If a truck is allowed to run out of DEF completely, the engine's power is reduced, limiting the vehicle’s speed to 5 mph, together with a solid red warning light.

What is the shelf life of DEF?

Generally, DEF has a shelf life of two years. However, if the fluid is exposed to direct sunlight, or if it is in warm temperatures for extended periods of time, the shelf life will be considerably reduced. DEF packaging is normally labeled with an expiration date.

Is DEF corrosive?

DEF is not toxic, harmful or dangerous. In fact, of all the fluids used in a truck, such as diesel, engine oil, brake fluid, antifreeze and windscreen wash, DEF is the least hazardous. However, it is corrosive for some metals. Ask your DEF supplier for more information about the properties of this fluid.
