Diesel Vehicle Maintenance: Why Choose Diesel?

The Diesel Technology Forum noted that U.S. clean diesel vehicle sales have jumped 25 percent in the first six months of 2014. According to the Diesel Technology Forum, 2013 diesel car registrations (which includes cars, SUVs, pickup trucks and vans) are up 30 percent since 2010, while overall vehicle sales only increased by 3.6 percent during the same period. Along with strong sales of diesel cars and SUVs, diesel pickups continue to post strong numbers across the country.

This analysis is based on data compiled by IHS Automotive in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The Diesel Technology Forum commissioned the study to evaluate trends in the sales of diesels and hybrids, while identifying trends based on geography and comparing 2013 sales to previous years.

Diesel Sales Surge -- So, why are diesel sales so strong?

According to Allen Schaffer, executive director of the Diesel Technology Forum, "Clean diesel vehicles are 30 percent more fuel-efficient than gasoline vehicles and do not require compromises in vehicle performance, driving patterns, or utility." Improvements in technology have relatively quieted common-rail fueling systems and have virtually eliminated visible smoke emissions from tailpipes. In addition to the advanced technology, Schaeffer says, "Clean diesels also deliver competitive or superior total cost-of-ownership compared to other fuel-efficient technologies." Diesel is also now widely available at more than half of fuel stations across the country, according to the Diesel Technology Forum.

The study shows that western states have the highest percentage of diesels; Wyoming leads the pack with 10.8 percent of all registered vehicles (pickups, cars, vans, and SUVs) being diesel-powered. Montana is not far behind with diesels accounting for 8.1 percent of all vehicle registrations, and Idaho with 6.9 percent. Pickup truck sales continue to far outnumber the sales of diesel cars and SUVs. The figures show diesel pickups are gaining popularity in the Northeast as well.

Manufacturers have announced plans for more than 10 new diesel vehicles to go on sale during the next three years. According to the IHS/Polk data, seven million diesel passenger vehicles are currently registered in the U.S.

Diesel Engine Service: A Word About Diesels.

Clouds of sooty black smoke, engine clatter, and anemic performance were once the tell-tale signs of a diesel vehicle. It was also difficult to find certified mechanics that could provide quality diesel engine repair or diesel engine service. Today, the newest diesel models offer impressive performances, driving experiences nearly as quiet as gasoline-powered cars, emissions that easily meet today's stringent standards, and a fuel economy that can exceed even the most efficient gasoline-electric hybrid models. In addition, diesel engines produce more torque than their equivalent gasoline counterparts. It's that torque that gives you the power to start strong and get up to speed with a confident feeling of power.

More and more people are adding diesel cars and trucks to their vehicle shopping list. Automakers have responded to the demand, introducing diesel engines into models across their lineups. Leading the charge are traditional diesel sales leaders Volkswagen and Audi, joined by Jeep, Ram, Chevrolet and BMW with impressive new entries into the market.

Nearly all of the new diesel models utilize a system that injects diesel exhaust fluid into the exhaust stream. This diesel exhaust fluid neutralizes the particulates that once made diesels so dirty. It's typically refilled at oil change intervals, although it can be purchased at any auto parts store.

Most hybrids achieve their highest efficiency in city driving (due to the energy that they can reclaim through braking). Consumers have consistently complained about the difficulty of approaching EPA mileage estimates. Diesels earn their highest efficiency on the highway and many diesel vehicles exceed the EPA estimates consistently, without a lot of effort.

Attention Vehicle Shoppers: Although many diesel models are a little pricey, in the long-term, lower fuel consumption and increased engine longevity can make up for the higher initial cost.
