A breakdown while on the road, could result in an unexpected engine rebuild. That is the last thing you want to experience as part of your summer vacation. It is a known fact that hot weather makes existing problems worse.
Follow this road map to good summer vehicle maintenance:

#1 - Read your owner's manual – Know the manufacturer's recommended service schedules, including an engine service.

#2 - Engine Repair – Prevent an engine rebuild by getting engine problems (such as hard starts, rough idling, stalling, diminished power, etc.) taken care of before you head down the road. Replace dirty filters air, fuel, PCV, etc.

#3 – Oil Change -- Change oil and filter as specified in your manual. If your driving is mostly stop-and-go or consists of frequent short trips, you may need an oil change more often (every 3,000 miles or so).

#4 - Cooling System -- The level and condition of the coolant should be checked frequently. Flush and refill as recommended. Inspect the tightness and condition of drive belts, clamps, and hoses.

#5 - Windshield Wipers – Be prepared for summer rain storms. Replace old blades and stock up on windshield washer solvent.

#6 – Battery – Hot weather kills batteries. A professional can determine the charge of your battery and whether it needs to be replaced. Clean corrosion from posts and cable connections; clean all surfaces; retighten all connections and check fluid level monthly.

#7 – Lights -- Inspect all lights and replace any burned out bulbs. Periodically clean road grime from all lenses.

#8 - Exhaust System – Inspect for leaks. Check the trunk and floorboards for small holes.

#9 – Tires – Make sure the tires have the correct amount of air pressure. Inspect tread for uneven wearing and cupping, the sidewalls for cuts and nicks. Rotate the tires if recommended. Remember the spare, and be sure the jack is in the trunk.

#10 – Emergencies -- Carry a first-aid kit, blanket, flares, snacks, water, and a cell phone.
