Oil Changes: Where does used motor oil go?

Because of the millions of vehicles on the road, there are oil changes taking place simultaneously all over the country. That means there are gallons of used motor oil and used filters being deposited "somewhere" on a daily basis. It is unfortunate that in the U.S., less than 60 percent of used motor oil is recycled. Therefore, after every oil change, please make sure to dispose of your used motor oil and filter in a responsible way.

If you are looking for quality Oil Change Coupons Milton-Freewater OR than find our dedicated Auto Repair Milton-Freewater OR shop. Also meet our Muffler Milton-Freewater OR mechanic for your vehicle’s safety.

Here are some staggering facts about the harm that can be caused from used motor oil.

• Used motor oil can contain toxic substances such as benzene, lead, zinc, and cadmium.
• The oil from a single oil change (1 gallon) can ruin the taste of a million gallons of drinking water (1 part per million), the supply of 50 people for one year.
• One pint of oil can produce a slick of approximately one acre on the surface of water, preventing the replenishment of dissolved oxygen, impairing photosynthetic processes, and block sunlight.
• Crankcase oil accounts for more than 40 percent of total oil pollution of the nation's harbors and waterways.
• Oil dumped on land reduces soil productivity.
• Concentrations of 50 to 100 parts per million of used oil can foul sewage treatment processes.
• Recycling all the filters sold annually in the United States would result in the recovery of about 160,000 tons of steel (enough to make 16 new stadiums the size of Atlanta's Turner Stadium).

Remember: Please remember to recycle your used motor oil and filter. Your local auto repair shop will usually be happy to dispose of it for you.

Truck and Car Battery Winter Maintenance Tips.

For many people, the New Year may present a financial challenge and you may need to hold onto your current vehicle a little longer than you expected. It's easy to overlook seemingly minor vehicle maintenance issues, such as maintaining your truck or car battery.

If you are looking for reliable Car Battery Milton-Freewater OR than find Wentland Diesel Auto also caring with best Auto Repair Services Milton-Freewater OR. Find proper Starters Milton- Freewater OR to have safe driving.

Winter can throw a few curveballs and end up leaving you with a dead truck or car battery--and you stranded out in the cold. The changing of seasons can be harsh on your vehicle.  For example:

  • The winter season is the most likely time for a truck or car battery to die.
  • When temperatures drop, a battery's Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) capacity drops.
  • Older car batteries have a hard time holding current when it's colder.
  • Seasonal temperature changes can damage the cells in your battery, leading to battery failure in the winter.
  • Preventive maintenance for your truck and car battery can save you from being stranded in the winter. See the tips below.

Winter Maintenance Tips: Avoid the hassle of an inconvenient truck or car battery replacement, especially during the cold winter months, with these tips:

  1. Park in a Garage. An insulated garage will keep your battery warm in the winter. Try to insulate the battery if your garage is not insulated, or if you have to you park outside.
  2. Keep your battery clean. A dirty connection will weaken the charge. Remove the clamps and clean away grease, dirt and oxidation.
  3. Recharge with Solar. You can purchase an inexpensive solar charger to refill your battery's charge with solar energy. Just be sure not to overcharge.
  4. Add Distilled Water. If you're stretching the life of a conventional battery, you may have to add some water to it. Use distilled water, is possible.
  5. Secure the Battery. If your battery is jiggling around, it could tip over. Battery acid spilling all over your motor is not good. Keep the battery tray clean and make sure it sits correctly.

Diesel Vehicle Maintenance: Why Choose Diesel?

The Diesel Technology Forum noted that U.S. clean diesel vehicle sales have jumped 25 percent in the first six months of 2014. According to the Diesel Technology Forum, 2013 diesel car registrations (which includes cars, SUVs, pickup trucks and vans) are up 30 percent since 2010, while overall vehicle sales only increased by 3.6 percent during the same period. Along with strong sales of diesel cars and SUVs, diesel pickups continue to post strong numbers across the country.

This analysis is based on data compiled by IHS Automotive in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The Diesel Technology Forum commissioned the study to evaluate trends in the sales of diesels and hybrids, while identifying trends based on geography and comparing 2013 sales to previous years.

Diesel Sales Surge -- So, why are diesel sales so strong?

According to Allen Schaffer, executive director of the Diesel Technology Forum, "Clean diesel vehicles are 30 percent more fuel-efficient than gasoline vehicles and do not require compromises in vehicle performance, driving patterns, or utility." Improvements in technology have relatively quieted common-rail fueling systems and have virtually eliminated visible smoke emissions from tailpipes. In addition to the advanced technology, Schaeffer says, "Clean diesels also deliver competitive or superior total cost-of-ownership compared to other fuel-efficient technologies." Diesel is also now widely available at more than half of fuel stations across the country, according to the Diesel Technology Forum.

The study shows that western states have the highest percentage of diesels; Wyoming leads the pack with 10.8 percent of all registered vehicles (pickups, cars, vans, and SUVs) being diesel-powered. Montana is not far behind with diesels accounting for 8.1 percent of all vehicle registrations, and Idaho with 6.9 percent. Pickup truck sales continue to far outnumber the sales of diesel cars and SUVs. The figures show diesel pickups are gaining popularity in the Northeast as well.

Manufacturers have announced plans for more than 10 new diesel vehicles to go on sale during the next three years. According to the IHS/Polk data, seven million diesel passenger vehicles are currently registered in the U.S.

Diesel Engine Service: A Word About Diesels.

Clouds of sooty black smoke, engine clatter, and anemic performance were once the tell-tale signs of a diesel vehicle. It was also difficult to find certified mechanics that could provide quality diesel engine repair or diesel engine service. Today, the newest diesel models offer impressive performances, driving experiences nearly as quiet as gasoline-powered cars, emissions that easily meet today's stringent standards, and a fuel economy that can exceed even the most efficient gasoline-electric hybrid models. In addition, diesel engines produce more torque than their equivalent gasoline counterparts. It's that torque that gives you the power to start strong and get up to speed with a confident feeling of power.

If you are looking for quality Engine Service Milton-Freewater OR than find our dedicated Auto Service Milton-Freewater OR shop. Also meet our Automotive Repair Milton-Freewater OR mechanic for your vehicle’s safety.

More and more people are adding diesel cars and trucks to their vehicle shopping list. Automakers have responded to the demand, introducing diesel engines into models across their lineups. Leading the charge are traditional diesel sales leaders Volkswagen and Audi, joined by Jeep, Ram, Chevrolet and BMW with impressive new entries into the market.

Nearly all of the new diesel models utilize a system that injects diesel exhaust fluid into the exhaust stream. This diesel exhaust fluid neutralizes the particulates that once made diesels so dirty. It's typically refilled at oil change intervals, although it can be purchased at any auto parts store.

Most hybrids achieve their highest efficiency in city driving (due to the energy that they can reclaim through braking). Consumers have consistently complained about the difficulty of approaching EPA mileage estimates. Diesels earn their highest efficiency on the highway and many diesel vehicles exceed the EPA estimates consistently, without a lot of effort.

Attention Vehicle Shoppers: Although many diesel models are a little pricey, in the long-term, lower fuel consumption and increased engine longevity can make up for the higher initial cost.

Spending Too Much on Fuel? Truck or Auto Repair May Be Needed.

Summer is over and people are returning to their busy schedules of work and school. The prices for gas and diesel have stabilized a little (until the next holiday that is). However, most families would appreciate some auto repair tips that will help them save cash at the pump! The auto repair services and good-sense driving tips described below will not only help you keep money in your wallet, but also help keep our environment clean.

Ways To Increase Fuel Efficiency:

  • Replace air filters. Replace a dirty and clogged air filter as it causes your engine to work harder and your vehicle to become less fuel efficient.
  • Be serious about your truck and auto repair. Follow the manufacturer-recommended vehicle maintenance schedule for optimum operating performance.
  • Regular oil changes. Use the right oil with the proper oil viscosity.
  • Avoid idling. Turn the engine off if you have to sit more than a few minutes.
  • Watch the speed limit. Driving over 60mph generally increases the amount of fuel used. Using cruise control on the open highway will help maintain a steady speed and avoid unnecessary acceleration.
  • Use lower octane fuel. Buy the lowest octane appropriate for your vehicle unless it requires premium. Pricey premium doesn't boost fuel economy.
  • Don't "top off" the tank. Overfilling wastes cash on gas you won't use as the gas will slop and seep off.
  • Tighten the gas cap. A loose, missing, or damaged cap can cause you to lose up to 30 gals per year through evaporation.
  • Correct tire pressure. Underinflated tires create more resistance, making your engine work harder, reducing fuel mileage and tire life.
  • Basic engine service. A misfiring spark plug or a poorly running engine significantly reduces fuel efficiency.
  • Eliminate drag. Remove roof racks or bicycle racks when not being used, empty the trunk, and keep the proper wheel alignment and balancing.
  • Fuel Injector cleaning service. A clean fuel system restores performance and improves drivability, maximizes fuel economy and reduces vehicle emissions.

Smart Driving Tips to Keep Your Wheel Alignment in Place!

If you've completed all your summer road trips and are starting to settle in for the Fall Season, you may want to have your wheel alignment checked. Loss of the proper car alignment is a common occurrence after traveling bumpy roads. As you get back on a busy schedule of work, school, sports, music lessons, etc., there are things you can do to keep your ride comfortable and reduce potential damage to your vehicle:

If you are looking for Engine Repair Milton-Freewater OR your search can be over now with our Wentland Diesel Automotive Repair Milton-Freewater OR Shop. Also find Auto Electrical Service Milton-Freewater OR to keep your car up to date.

Smart Driving Tips --

  • Check your tire pressure on a regular basis. If a tire is too soft, it handles poorly and a sudden bump or pothole may cause it to rupture.Over-inflated tires are susceptible to damage as well.
  • Keep the windshield clean! You want to make sure you can see any obstacles in the road.
  • Stay focused and pay attention to the traffic around you. Are they slowing or stopping for a problem in the road ahead? Avoid tailgating as this restricts your ability to anticipate obstacles or sudden braking by the vehicle in front of you.
  • Beware of puddles–there might be a deep and sharp-edged pothole lurking below.
  • Reduce your speed on bumpy gravel roads. Slower hits generally involve less damage from losing your car alignment or getting a punctured tire.
  • If you do have to drive over a bump or hit a pothole, take your foot off the accelerator, brake lightly, if at all, and then let off the brakes entirely the moment before impact. Hard braking can actually cause greater contact between the tire and the bump where it might otherwise glide over it. Immediately pay attention to whether or not you have a flat tire. You may want to pull off the road at your next opportunity to check your tires or rims for damage.
  • Do not swerve in a last ditch attempt to avoid a bump or pothole. Aside from creating a hazard for vehicles immediately behind and beside you, you risk hitting the bump at an oblique angle, which can cause more damage to the tire, wheel rim and car alignment.
Tip to Remember: If your car is pulling to one side of the road or the other while driving on a straight level road, it is a good indication that the wheel alignment is off and needs attention.

Timely Vehicle Maintenance: Keep Your Teen Safe at the Wheel!

Parents have spent years protecting their children from all sorts of dangers on the road and off. They are now facing the fact that their teenager will soon be getting behind the wheel of a vehicle to get back and forth from school and other activities. One of the first steps of preparation is to make sure that all recommended vehicle maintenance has been performed on the vehicle your teen will be driving. Due to lack of experience, they will probably not recognize the signs indicating a pending car maintenance problem.

If you are looking for quality Oil Change Milton-Freewater OR your search can be over now with our Wentland Diesel Car Maintenance Milton-Freewater OR Shop. Also find Car Battery Milton-Freewater OR replacement to keep your car up to date.

Agree to the Rules, or don't Drive! Don't just hand over the car keys without a set of rules. Surveys show that teens whose parents impose driving restrictions typically engage in less risky driving and are involved in fewer crashes. Your teenager should agree to follow these five rules before getting behind the wheel:
  • No Cell Phones! No matter how experienced a driver is, talking on a cell phone while driving reduces your reaction time similar to that of a 70-year-old. Texting involves manual, visual, and cognitive distraction and is among the worst of all driver distractions. Parents should act as a role model by turning off their cell phone and putting it in the glove compartment before putting the key in the ignition.
  • No Extra Passengers! In a study analyzed by NHTSA, teen drivers were two-and-a-half times more likely to engage in one or more potentially risky behaviors when driving with a teenage peer compared to when driving alone. Research also shows that the risk of a fatal crash goes up in direct relation to the number of teenagers in the car.
  • No Speeding! Speeding is a major factor in teen crash fatalities (35% in 2011). Make sure your teen understands the dangers of speeding and staying in control of the vehicle. Remind them to always follow the posted limit and of the potential consequences.
  • No Alcohol! Drivers 15-20 years old are at far greater risk of death in crashes involving alcohol than adults, even though they cannot legally purchase or possess it. If lucky enough to survive a crash, your teen will have to face the consequences of breaking the law, which could include a trip to jail, the loss of a driver's license, and dozens of other expenses including attorney fees, court costs, other fines, and insurance consequences. Your teen may also lose academic eligibility, college acceptance, and scholarship awards.
  • Always Buckle Up! Whether driving across town or just around the neighborhood, remind your teenagers that wearing seat belts is the absolute best way to protect themselves and their passengers by helping them maintain control of the vehicle in emergency situations. You should set an example by buckling up every time you get in the car.
Talking is important, but action is even better. As a parent, you are the #1 influence molding your young adult into a safe and capable driver. Don't let your teen become a statistic.

To help ensure the safety of your teen's vehicle, make sure all recommended car maintenance is up-to-date.
