Brake Service: Headed for Brake Repair?

As you know, the braking system is a complicated process involving various components working together to perform one important function—stop your car! When you step on the brake pedal, you expect your vehicle to come to a quick stop. If that isn't happening, you know that something isn't right and it's time to schedule a brake service. A professional auto mechanic can determine whether a minor brake repair is all that is needed, or if you're headed for a complete brake replacement.

If you are looking for Brake Replacement Milton-Freewater OR your search can be over with our Wentland Diesel Auto Repair Services Milton-Freewater OR shop . Meet us for Brakes Milton-Freewater OR to have safe driving.

A Yearly Brake Service:

Mark your calendar for a brake service for at least once a year. A brake service should include checking the pads, rotors, and other vital components of the braking system. If you wait until you hear or feel signs of trouble before making an appointment, more than likely it's already too late and you will be headed for a brake repair. One smart tip is to have an inspection every time you rotate your tires (about every 5,000-10,000 miles).

If a problem is discovered, have it taken care of right away. If you wait too long, you may be looking at a complete brake replacement due to permanent damage (such as warped rotors). This will cost significantly more than a minor brake repair.

An Auto Shop Advises: Is it possible to get better MPG with the A/C running?

As summertime continues to heat up and gas prices start to rise, some drivers may have to make a difficult decision as to: whether or not to run the air conditioning while driving? An auto center would like to offer some professional advice. Please read more to find out what this auto shop has to say:

If you are looking for Tune ups  Milton-Freewater OR your search can be over now with our Wentland Diesel Auto Center Milton-Freewater OR Shop . Find Quality Vehicle Maintenance Milton-Freewater OR  for Long term Vehicle Maintenance.

Most people think that turning the A/C off might be more cost effective than driving with it running. However, what a lot of people don't know is that driving with the windows down can have a similar effect on the engine, and subsequently, the mileage. When the windows are down while driving, more drag force is created, causing the engine to exert more energy to propel the car forward, and thus reducing gas mileage.

So if running the A/C is more cost-efficient, then why does it seem like your tank is constantly being drained and you are headed to an auto center to fill up or for an A/C service?

Consider these three issues when deciding to use, or not to use, the A/C:

  1. Size of Vehicle: While it's true that most small cars with smaller engines (like 4 cylinders) have better overall gas mileage, they generally have to work harder to generate the electricity needed to run the A/C. In this case, it could be more efficient to drive with the windows cracked slightly, and with the fan going, instead of the A/C.
  2. Type of Trip: If you're planning to do a lot of stop-and-go city driving, it's more fuel efficient to leave the air off and the windows down. Watch your speed and drag force, however, as it affects engine performance and MPG.
  3. Frequency of Maintenance: Like every other part of your car, the air compressor and system that works to cool down your car must be regularly serviced at your auto shop in order to keep it performing most efficiently. Regularly changing the air filter will keep your A/C running without unneeded trips to your auto shop for repairs. Ask your auto center about air conditioning service plans or specials.

Tip to Remember: You can minimize running the air conditioner by parking your car in shaded areas, crack the windows open slightly, and allow the car to cool off before entering.

Diesel Fuel Injection Service: Diesel vs. Gas

You may be wondering, should I buy a diesel powered truck, or a gas powered truck? Here are some facts to consider before making your decision. One big difference between a diesel engine  and a gas engine is in the injection process. Most car engines use port injection or a carburetor. A carburetor mixes air and fuel long before the air enters the cylinder. In a car engine, therefore, all of the fuel is loaded into the cylinder during the intake stroke and then compressed. Diesel engines use direct fuel injection -- the diesel fuel is injected directly into the cylinder.

The injector on a diesel engine is its most complex component. The injector has to be able to withstand the temperature and pressure inside the cylinder and still deliver the fuel in a fine mist. Getting the mist circulated in the cylinder so that it is evenly distributed may be a problem, so some diesel engines employ special induction valves, pre-combustion chambers or other devices to swirl the air in the combustion chamber to improve the ignition and combustion process.

Some diesel engines contain a glow plug. When a diesel engine is cold, the compression process may not raise the air to a high enough temperature to ignite the fuel. The glow plug is an electrically heated wire that heats the combustion chambers and raises the air temperature when the engine is cold so that the engine can start. Smaller engines and engines that do not have advanced computer control use glow plugs to solve the cold-starting problem. Glow plugs are rarely used today on larger engines. The ECM senses ambient air temperature and retards the timing of the engine in cold weather so the injector sprays the fuel at a later time. The air in the cylinder is compressed more, creating more heat, which aids in starting.

If you want a truck with lots of towing power, a diesel fuel injection system is the only way to go. If you want a fuel efficient commuter car for urban driving, consider a hybrid car, a turbo diesel-powered car, or a hybrid SUV. Diesel fuel injection engines are much better than gasoline engines in thermal efficiency. They have higher compression ratios and ability to run on very lean fuel mixtures, which enables them to get about 30% better fuel economy than a gasoline engine.

Automotive Service: Your Vehicle is a Computer!

With the advancement of technology in today's modern vehicles, taking good care of your vehicle is becoming increasingly more complex. Professional automotive service is a must! The automotive industry is now classified as a "high-tech" industry. Vehicle owners understand that when it comes to automotive repair, their vehicle is significantly more high-tech than just a few years ago and thus requires highly-trained automotive technicians to take care of any automotive service.

If you are looking for Transmission Repair Milton-Freewater OR your search can be over now with our wentland Diesel Automotive Service Milton-Freewater OR . Meet our Car Air Conditioner Milton-Freewater OR Mechanic to solve any of your car problems.

Why is the automotive industry considered as "high-tech?" The Center for Automotive Research (CAR), a nonprofit research organization based in Ann Arbor, MI, published a report defined a "high-tech industry" as an industry sector that meets certain criteria and contains particular characteristics. For example, 10% or more of the industry's workforce is made up of technical employees, such as engineers. In CAR's summary, it stated that the automotive industry "leads the pack" when it comes to technological developments and applications.

Here are a few Interesting facts about the automotive industry:
  • Manufacturers spend an average of $1,200 on research and development for every vehicle manufactured worldwide.
  • Four times as many as just ten years ago, today's vehicles contain around 60 microprocessors.
  • 40% to 50% of the total cost of a vehicle is comprised of electronics (up from just 20% a decade ago).
  • More than 10 million lines of software code in a typical computer network are in each vehicle manufacturerd (over half the lines of code that reportedly run Boeing's 787 Dreamliner!)
  • Approximately 4,800 patents are granted to the automotive industry every year.
  • GM and Ford individually spend more money on research and development than either General Electric or Apple.
  • Five automakers (Volkswagen, Toyota, General Motors, Honda and Daimler) are among the top 20 in all corporate research and development spending.
Because of the advanced technology and computerized systems, CAR's study further surmises that an automobile is the most complex purchase made by consumers.

Safe Summer Driving Includes Regular Oil Changes!

The hot days of summer are close at hand. If you haven't taken your vehicle in for an oil change at the recommended interval since the cold of winter, now is the time! An oil change service is also a good time to have other systems of the car checked out. Don't get caught out in the blistering heat with unexpected engine problems.

If you are looking for Truck Repair Milton-Freewater OR your search can be over now with our Wentland Diesel & Auto Repair Services Milton-Freewater OR. Also find Oil Change Coupons Milton-Freewater OR  with us.

To make sure your vehicle can endure hot summer driving, here are some basic oil change facts:

  • Have regular oil changes. When oil is hot, it becomes thinner, which causes it to lose some of its cooling efficiency for the motor. Regular oil changes are crucial when it comes to protecting your motor against extreme changes in temperature.
  • The importance of viscosity. Viscosity is measured using two numbers and a letter. For example, 10W-40; the first number (10) refers to the thickness at cold temperatures (0ºFahrenheit), and the second number refers to the thickness at high temperatures (212º Fahrenheit.) The first number is crucial for the cold months of winter--make sure your engine is protected at startup.
  • The best oil for the best engine protection. Your selection will depend on the climate in which you live, compatibility with your vehicle, and your budget.
-- Synthetic - maintains a more consistent viscosity over a wide range of temperatures, but it is more expensive. It could be incompatible with certain older engines.

-- Premium conventional – natural oil with a higher quality for increased levels of protection.
-- Synthetic blends - a combination of both natural and synthetic, providing the benefits of synthetic without the higher cost.

To make sure your vehicle survives summer's hot temperatures, check your owner's manual for the correct type of oil. Your oil change specialist can also give you expert advice if you have any questions.

3 Radiator Service Tips!

Along with the beautiful flowers of Spring come thoughts of spring cleaning--including your car or truck! A good place to start is with a needed radiator service. Don't let yourself get stranded on the side of the road on a hot summer day with an engine that is overheating--and a costly radiator repair bill! Schedule a radiator service with a trusted mechanic before a problem actually develops.

If you are looking for Reliable  Brake Repair Milton-Freewater OR than find our Wentland Automotive Repair Milton-Freewater OR shop. Meet our Radiator Repair Milton-Freewater OR Mechanic to solve any of your car problems.

Keep your vehicle's cooling system operating at peak efficiency with three radiator service tips:

Before starting the engine: Check the level of the coolant/antifreeze.With the engine cold, remove the cap from the radiator and look inside. You should be able to see the fluid. If you see any leaking on the ground or in the engine compartment, and you have to add more than a pint, schedule a radiator service to have the cooling system pressure tested.
  • If your engine is overheating (and if there is no visible leak and the fluid level is correct), pay attention to "when" it overheats. This will give your mechanic a good idea as to the possible cause for the appropriate radiator repair.

When the engine is idling: Make sure the air conditioner cooling fan is operating.
  • The air conditioner compressor requires a cooling fan to operate as long as the compressor is on.
  • The cooling fan prevents the engine from overheating, especially at idle or low speeds.

While the engine is running at driving speed: Make sure the coolant/anti-freeze is circulating properly.
  • Airflow and coolant circulation are crucial at 55 MPH. The water pump should be pumping a large amount of coolant/antifreeze throughout the cooling system.
  • If overheating is occurring at normal driving speeds, the airflow and coolant circulation could be restricted by a kinked radiator hose, a restricted radiator, or a stuck thermostat.

Don't put off a radiator repair for an overheating problem. Taking care of it early on can prevent major engine damage from occurring.

Exhaust System: The Muffler Tells All!

Is your car starting to perform poorly or loud noises coming from the muffler? Are you worried about the exhaust fumes polluting the air? These are common problems of a leaking exhaust system.

If you are looking for reliable Exhaust Systems Milton-Freewater OR your search can be over with our Wentland Diesel Auto Center Milton-Freewater OR . Also find Oil Changes Milton-Freewater OR  with us.

Here are three main signs to look for indicating your vehicle has a leak in the exhaust system;

  • The "check engine" light stays illuminated;
  • The engine runs and idles rough; and
  • Loud noises coming from the muffler.

You may be able to check your exhaust system yourself to determine if there is a leak, and pinpoint the location and source. Here are some tips that may save you valuable time and money:

  • First, make sure the car is cool while you look under the hood. Because metal expands as it heats up, small leaks will get even smaller, making them difficult to detect.
  • Remove the plastic engine cover to inspect the exhaust manifold for cracking or warping. This problem is quite common, especially with older cars.
  • Check the gaskets for cracking, another common cause of leaks. You may feel hot air escaping as well as a strong smell of fumes. In older cars, the gasket connecting the manifold to the cylinder head can crack just with everyday wear and tear.
  • Check the muffler for rust--whether it is just surface, or if it goes all the way through the metal. Areas weakened by rust often cause leaks.
  • Temporarily cover the muffler to force the exhaust through any leaks. Start at the engine and follow the exhaust system all the way to the end, feeling for hot air escaping through the pipe, especially at the connectors, common areas of leaks. The muffler will get hot, so be careful not to touch it.
Following your own inspection, or if you're not comfortable conducting these tests yourself, be sure to have your mechanic take a look. Most auto shops will run these tests free of charge and then be able to recommend the appropriate repair.
